The ZSU-23-4, known by the name Shilka, is a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft system on a tracked chassis. In its turret it carries four 23 mm automatic cannons, which can lay down very dense fire on low-flying targets. At the rear of the turret is a folding radar antenna for ranging; it was that which gave the machine its unmistakable silhouette. The system was widely exported and served in many armies for decades, often being used against ground targets as well.
This is a kit in 1:72 scale, that is in the size in which a whole column can be built on a single shelf. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The range of parts, the marking option and the recommended shades are given in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
Try the parts dry before gluing, cut away any excess material with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder back. Wash and degrease the model before painting. The turret, with its angular surfaces and the antenna, is rewarding to shade: apply the base shade in several light coats and only then work with dust and wear on the edges. Fit the cannon barrels right at the very end; they bend easily.
A small scale forgives fewer lapses in cleanliness of work, but the build is quick and the result takes up little room. For a modeler with basic experience it is a manageable whole.
Paints, glue and filler are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
