Masking set 1:35 Mastiff 2

This is not a model but an aid to painting. The masks are cut in advance to the shape of the surfaces that are to stay unpainted after spraying, and they are stuck onto a model of a wheeled vehicle in 1:35 scale that is already under way. It is based on the dimensions of the Meng kit.

The mask and the weathering

On wheeled equipment deployed in a dusty setting the weathering is done boldly: dust filters, mud effects on the wheel arches and pigments on the underside of the body. Those are exactly the steps that put the glazing most at risk. If you leave the mask on the model right to the end of the weathering, you will have perfectly clean glass under it, which can then be dusted deliberately only where you want it.

Use

• Leave the mask on the model during the application of filters, washes and pigments as well.
• On wheeled equipment spray the tires separately, with the rims masked, or fit the wheels right at the end.
• Blow the pigment off the edge of the mask before removing it, so that it does not get under the film.
• Take the mask off at an angle and slowly, so that the weathering is not torn off the surrounding surface.
• Apply dust to the glass only at the very end, sparingly and only in streaks, not over the whole area.
