About product

SX-Art 1:72 mask set for the late-production MiG-29

A mask set from SX-Art in 1:72 scale for a model of the MiG-29 in its late production form. It is a set of self-adhesive masks cut to shape for the glazing and other areas of the model, not a kit. The masks are cut to the GWH kit in its late version, so they fit the shape of its canopy and the framing gains a crisp edge without any cutting of tape.

The real subject

The MiG-29 is a single-seat twin-engine combat aircraft with two separate air intakes under the wing roots and twin vertical tails. Later machines of the basic series differ from the early ones in details of the airframe around the spine and in the equipment; it is for those that this set is intended, as the designation in the name states. The large bubble canopy with its few frames is clearly visible on a model, and an uneven paint edge will not hide on it.

How to use the masks

First degrease the clear part and let it dry perfectly; keep your fingers off the visible surface, as a print shows through the paint. Lift an individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick around the edge as well, because it is exactly how tightly the edge seats that decides whether the paint transition will be crisp. Spray thinly and in several coats, as a thick coat tends to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. A proven sequence is to spray the interior shade of the cabin framing first and only then the covering outer color. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely, because after a longer time the adhesive comes away less easily.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want crisp canopy framing without brushwork by hand
  • Builders in small scale, where cutting tape for tiny frames is tedious
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and need a repeatably clean edge
  • Beginners, for whom masking the canopy is the hardest part of the build

FAQ

It is not. It is a mask set, a set of masks cut to shape that are stuck onto the parts of the model before spraying. Neither the model itself nor paints are included in the package.

The masks are cut to the shape of the GWH kit. On a model from another manufacturer, or on another mold of the same type, they usually do not seat accurately, so check which kit you are building first.

The set is cut for the kit of the later production form of the type. Early and late machines differ in details of the airframe, so masks intended for the early version may not seat accurately on a late model and the other way round.

Lift them with tweezers at a sharp angle shortly after the paint has dried to the touch. If you wait for the finish to cure completely, the adhesive holds harder and the coat may lift with the mask.

Count on single use. Once lifted off, the edge loses its grip, and on a second application it no longer seats tightly enough to hold a crisp transition.
