About product

SX-Art 1:72 mask set for the F-4B/N Phantom II

A mask set from SX-Art in 1:72 scale for a model of the F-4B/N Phantom II. It is not a kit: these are self-adhesive masks cut to shape for the glazing and other areas of the model. The two-seat cockpit of the Phantom has two separate sliding sections and fairly rich framing, so this is exactly where pre-cut masks pay off most.

The real subject

The McDonnell Douglas F-4B Phantom II was a two-seat carrier-borne fighter with a pair of turbojets, a characteristic cranked wing with raised outer panels and tailplanes set at a downward angle. The F-4N version came out of a later rebuild of F-4B airframes: the machines were given a strengthened structure and revised equipment, yet in external shape they stayed very close to the earlier version. The set therefore covers both designations at once, as its name states.

How to use the masks

First degrease the clear part and let it dry perfectly; keep your fingers off the visible surface, as a print shows through the paint. Lift an individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it down from the center toward the edges so that no air bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick around the edge as well, because it is exactly how tightly the edge seats that decides whether the paint transition will be crisp. Spray thinly and in several coats, as a thick coat tends to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. A proven sequence is to spray the interior shade of the cabin framing first and only then the covering outer color. Lift the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely, because after a longer time the adhesive comes away less easily.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want crisp canopy framing without brushwork by hand
  • Builders in small scale, where cutting tape for tiny frames is tedious
  • Those who spray with an airbrush and need a repeatably clean edge
  • Beginners, for whom masking the canopy is the hardest part of the build

FAQ

It is not. It is a mask set, a set of masks cut to shape that are stuck onto the parts of the model before spraying. Neither the model itself nor paints are included in the package.

The masks are cut to the shape of the particular kit the set is intended for. On a model from another manufacturer, or on another mold of the same type, they usually do not seat accurately, so check which kit you are building first.

The name of the set gives both designations. The F-4N version came out of a rebuild of F-4B airframes and is very close to them in shape, so the canopy framing is common to both. Even so, check the particular kit the set is cut for first.

Lift them with tweezers at a sharp angle shortly after the paint has dried to the touch. If you wait for the finish to cure completely, the adhesive holds harder and the coat may lift with the mask.

Count on single use. Once lifted off, the edge loses its grip, and on a second application it no longer seats tightly enough to hold a crisp transition.
