A spare carving blade of medium size; there are two pieces in the package. A carving blade removes material in depth, not just along the surface: it suits deepening a groove, opening a blanked-off hole, cleaning up an inner edge or reshaping a part. The medium size is a compromise between reaching into small detail and a sensible rate of removal.
The blade is fitted into a handle of the matching range; whether it fits your handle is given in the manufacturer's instructions. Lead it away from yourself and remove material in small steps, without pressing. Under heavy pressure the blade jumps out of its path and the surface tears. Try it on an offcut first so that you learn how much material it takes off in one stroke. A blunt blade slips and tears the surface instead of cutting, so change it before it starts to skip.
Most often where a kit differs from the real subject: opening blanked-off vents and holes, cleaning up inner corners, adjusting the seating of a part that otherwise will not sit down, or hollowing material out beneath a surface that is meant to be recessed. It also comes into its own when working with filler, when excess has to be taken out of a hollow that abrasive paper cannot reach.
The blade is sharp straight from the factory, so unpack it carefully and work on a cutting mat. Put used blades away into a closed container, not into the bin. Keep an unused blade away from damp so that its surface does not go rough.
A handle and other tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
