A spare carving blade of medium size; there are two pieces in the package. A blade with a concave edge suits places where the straight edge of a knife slips: scooping material out of small areas, rounding edges off, cleaning out hollows and repairing shapes that a file does badly. The medium size is a compromise between stiffness and access into tight places. It does not replace a file or abrasive paper, with which a surface is leveled; the strength of a carving blade lies in removing material where a flat tool cannot reach and in the fact that it does not back off across a curved surface.
A sharp blade is safer than a blunt one: a blunt one needs more pressure and slips more easily. Lead the cut away from your body, hold the material and work over a mat rather than on the table top. Remove material in small steps and rather repeatedly than taking the depth all at once; on a hard material it pays to lead the blade always in the same direction and to level the surface only at the end. Keep your fingers out of the path of the edge.
Blades are a consumable and are replaced once they go blunt or the tip breaks. Before buying, check that your handle matches this type of fitting; details of the system are given by the manufacturer on the packaging. Leave unused blades in their original packaging so that they do not knock against each other, and put used ones away into a closed container. Blades belong out of the reach of children.
Two blades are supplied. A handle, a knife and other tools are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
