What the sheet contains

Letters in a green finish, intended for marking aircraft of the Luftwaffe in 1:144 scale. Besides national insignia, German machines also carried letter codes that identified the unit and the particular aircraft within it, and their color differed from machine to machine. This sheet covers the green variant, so it suits places where a colored letter is missing from a kit or does not match the machine you have chosen.

What it is good for

In 1:144 scale a letter measures only a few millimeters, and painting it with a brush so that it has a clean shape and even saturation is beyond the ability of most builders. A separate sheet with an alphabet also makes it possible to put together a marking that is not among the decals supplied with a kit, and so to build a particular machine from a photograph or from a publication.

How the decals are applied

Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether it is not a self-adhesive version: a self-adhesive film that has been soaked is irreversibly ruined, whereas a wet decal that has not been soaked can be soaked later. With the usual wet version, proceed as follows:

• cut the letter out close to the edge of the printing, so that as little carrier film as possible is left
• soak it in clean water for a few seconds and let it rest on paper
• settle it on a smooth gloss finish and press the water out with a soft cloth
• adjust the position while the decal is wet, as it can no longer be moved once it has dried
• once it has dried, overcoat it with varnish, so that the edge of the film disappears
