Where pastels come in handiest

Most often they serve for lightening a base color, for skin, for light cloth and for models in a delicate, friendly tuning of the kind found on stylized figures and toys. They also come into their own where sun fading of the surface needs to be suggested. The advantage of pastels is that light is built up with them gradually and they forgive a mistake; their disadvantage is lower covering power, so they are applied in thin coats.

Use

• Shake before use, as light pigments settle to the bottom particularly readily
• Apply in thin coats, as one thick coat will stay blotchy
• Lay light shades on a light base, not on a black primer
• Thin them for an airbrush, and pastels then go on very evenly
• If you want a faded surface, add the light tone from above, not over the whole area
