A themed set of Green Stuff World acrylic paints intended for figures of warriors from the dark side of a fantasy world. Acrylic is thinned and cleaned with water, so it works well in layers and is easy to correct. The set is put together around one motif, which is what helps most with dark schemes: the shades follow on from one another and there is no risk of the palette crumbling into unrelated tones.

A dark scheme needs contrast

The most common mistake with darkly tuned figures is that the whole model blends into one mass. Dark armor is not enough on its own; it needs a light edge, that is, a place where light would reflect, and it needs at least one accent of another color. That is precisely why with these schemes it pays to work from a dark base up to strong highlights and to let the model rest for a while, so that it can be judged whether it is still legible as a whole.

Use

• Shake before use, as the pigment settles to the bottom of the bottle
• Lay the base with an airbrush after thinning and finish the edges with a brush
• Keep the edge highlighting narrow, as a wide light stripe looks like a scratch
• Worn metal is done with a dark wash and spot chipping in exposed places
• Add one strong accent, otherwise the model blends into one mass
