A cork roadbed under the track. It damps the noise of running and gives the line the profile of an embankment, onto which ballast is then poured.
Responsibility details are not available.
A cork roadbed is laid under the track as a base. It fulfills two tasks at once: it cushions the track, so that the rattle of running is not transmitted into the baseboard of the layout and does not set it resonating like a drum, and at the same time it raises the line above the surrounding terrain and gives it sloping sides, that is, the profile of a real embankment. Ballast is then poured onto that and stuck down with thinned glue.
First draw the route on the baseboard and only then lay the roadbed, along the whole length of the route and with no gaps. On curves the strip is bent sideways, and with sharper curves it helps to nick the edge. It is glued with PVA glue applied in a thin coat and weighted down or pinned until it has dried. Sand the joints of two strips, so that no kink forms in the track, and level out any unevenness with sandpaper before you lay the track.
The width of the roadbed must match the track you are building. The size designation is given on the box of the strip; compare it with your track, so that the strip neither overhangs under the ties nor falls short. The difference can be told right after laying, and once it has been covered with ballast it is already hard to correct.
For builders of layouts who want a quiet line and a faithful embankment profile. The work is undemanding, but it pays not to hurry and to level the roadbed carefully: unevenness that you overlook under the track will show later in the running of the cars.
The track, glue and loose ballast are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
