The real subject

The T-1A Jayhawk is a twin-engine jet trainer derived from the Beechcraft 400A business aircraft. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D series turbofan engines housed on the sides of the rear fuselage; a typical feature is the high-set tail in the shape of the letter T. In the training system of the US Air Force it serves to prepare pilots destined for transport and tanker aircraft, that is, where the operation of larger machines has to be practiced rather than air combat. Against its civil basis it has a modified interior and equipment matching the training role.

Building and painting tips

The fuselage with its smooth surfaces and the extensive cabin glazing are the key points on this type: it pays off to fill all the joints carefully, sand them again and lay down a filler primer before painting. Glue the T-shaped tail only after thorough alignment, because a tilted stabilizer is immediately visible on a finished model. The single-color finish of training machines forgives little, so spray in thin layers with an airbrush and even out any unevenness with a further pass rather than by polishing. Apply the decals over a gloss base.
