A masking set from New Ware for the MiG-17F model in 1:48 scale, including the license-built versions. The masks are cut from kabuki tape, that is from a thin Japanese paper carrier with a mild adhesive. It is an accessory for the build, not a kit.
The MiG-17F was an interceptor with an afterburner, given the NATO reporting name Fresco-C. Besides Soviet production it was also built under license: in Poland as the Lim-5 and in China as the Shenyang J-5. It is therefore the same basic airframe, only from a different production line, which explains why all three designations appear together in the name of the set.
Kabuki tape is thin, it shapes well over curved surfaces and it does not tear when removed. The adhesive is weaker than on ordinary insulating tapes, so it does not lift dried varnish, yet it holds well enough to keep paint from running underneath. Always press an applied mask down with a toothpick all the way around, because the edge is what decides how sharp the line is. Spray square to the surface and in thin coats, and remove the mask shortly after the paint is dry to the touch, pulling it away at an angle with tweezers.
