Mitsubishi A6M3 model 22 Reisen canopy masks in 1:48 scale from Dead Design replace hours of cutting tape by hand with a set of templates cut to the shape of the cockpit framing.
Responsibility details are not available.
A Dead Design masking set for the glazing of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M3 carrier fighter in the model 22 version. The templates follow the shape of the cockpit framing of that type; they are applied to the clear part, cover the panes and leave the frame exposed for spraying.
Masking the long glazing of a Zero by hand means applying tape, tracing every frame with a scalpel and peeling off the excess, and all of that directly on a part that does not tolerate a single score. A pre-cut mask shortens that procedure to peeling, laying on and pressing down. The difference is not only in time: a template keeps the width of the frame the same along its whole length, which a hand cut practically never achieves on curved panes.
The model 22 went back to the longer folding wing of the earlier version but kept the more powerful engine installation of the model 32. The cockpit glazing therefore has the same division as on the other Zero variants and the painting templates are cut to its particular shape.
Wash and dry the clear part before applying; grease is the most common cause of a mask edge lifting. Lay the paint on in several light coats; one heavy coat makes a step at the edge, under which it then seeps. Spray first the shade the frame has on the inner face, and after that has dried the top camouflage. Remove the mask with tweezers only once it has cured, pulling at a shallow angle.
