About product

Mitsubishi A6M2b Reisen canopy masks in 1:48 scale

A set of Dead Design painting templates for the glazing of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2b Reisen carrier fighter. The templates are cut to the shape of the cockpit framing of that type: they are applied to the clear part, cover the areas of the panes and leave the frame exposed, so it can be sprayed together with the rest of the airframe.

How to work with the masks

Peel the mask off its backing, carry it over to the cleaned glazing and press it down so that the edge lies along the whole length of the frame. Cover the open areas between the individual panes with the rest of the sheet or a piece of tape. Then the spraying follows: first the color the frame has on its inner face, and after that has dried the top camouflage. The templates are taken off only once the varnish has cured, with pointed tweezers and at a shallow angle.

Why not cut tape by hand

The cockpit of the Zero is long and divided into a row of panes. Cutting by hand means dozens of cuts directly on the clear part, and with them the risk that the point of the scalpel will touch the glass; a score like that cannot be put right. A pre-cut mask leaves that step out. The main benefit, though, is that it keeps the width of the frame the same along its whole length; frames of unequal width show on a finished model more than most other shortcomings.

What to watch out for

Wash and dry the clear part before applying; grease from the fingers is the most common reason a mask does not hold. Lay the paint on in thin coats; a heavy coat creates a step at the edge and seepage under it is easy. If you varnish the model, reckon with the frames having to be dry before you remove the mask.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers for whom masking cockpits is the most time-consuming step of all.
  • Those who want crisp and even frames with no touching up.
  • Builders of Japanese naval fighters in 1:48 scale.
  • Anyone who does not want to work with a scalpel directly on a clear part.

FAQ

No. The templates are already cut to the shape of the framing of that type; they are only peeled off and applied to the clear part.

Only once the paint and any varnish have cured. Pull it with tweezers slowly, at a shallow angle and backwards, so that the edge of the sprayed frame is not lifted.

Press the edge of the mask down firmly with a toothpick or a blunt stick and spray thin coats. Most seepage comes from one heavy coat, not from several light ones.

Yes, but the surface has to be clean, dry and degreased. On greasy or dusty glass a mask does not hold reliably.
