About product

Mitsubishi A6M2b national insignia masks in 1:48 scale

A Dead Design masking set intended for spraying the national markings of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2b carrier fighter. It is not a kit and not a set of canopy masks: the templates serve strictly for painting the national insignia. This item is the form without a white outline, that is the single-color variant of the insignia.

Why spray the insignia instead of using a decal

A sprayed insignia is part of the paint layer, not a film stuck onto the surface. It has no carrier film, so no glossy outline arises around it and the insignia does not silver even on a less smooth or matte base. That also removes the usual procedure of a gloss varnish under a decal followed by matting the whole model. A modeler appreciates the same advantage when weathering: a sprayed insignia can be sanded through, chipped or gone over with a filter just like the camouflage around it, because there is no extra layer beneath it.

The single-color form and aligning the coats

Because this variant is without a white outline, it is sprayed in a single color and there is no alignment of coats to deal with. On multi-color insignia, where a light outline is laid under or around the main color, the templates are applied one after another and every further coat has to seat exactly on the one before; otherwise the outline widens on one side and disappears on the other. Here that step falls away and the work is noticeably quicker.

Usage tips

Spray the insignia only onto dry and unified camouflage. Press the mask down all the way around, so that paint cannot flow under the edge, and lay on several very thin coats; a heavy coat creates a step you can feel around the insignia. Lift the template off as soon as the paint has set, with tweezers and at a shallow angle, so that the layer beneath it is not raised.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want markings with no visible decal edge.
  • Builds with pronounced weathering, where a decal film would give itself away sooner or later.
  • Those who want to mix the shade of the insignia and match it to the paint around it.
  • Builders of Japanese naval fighters in 1:48 scale.

FAQ

No. They are painting templates. The insignia is sprayed with paint underneath them, so it becomes part of the paint and no applied film is left behind.

Silvering arises when air gets under the carrier film of a decal. A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so the effect has nowhere to appear, not even on a matte surface.

No. This is the variant without a white outline, so the insignia is sprayed in one color and coats laid on top of one another fall away.

Best of all shortly after the paint has set, while the layer is still flexible. Pull it with tweezers slowly and at a shallow angle back over itself.
