About product

A gun mantlet with the 76 mm M1 barrel for the M4A3E2 Sherman Jumbo in 1:35 scale

This is not a kit of a tank but an accessory to one. The set from PANZER ART replaces the gun mantlet and the barrel on a finished model of the M4A3E2 assault Sherman in 1:35 scale and thus changes the armament of the vehicle to the 76 mm M1 gun. Against the plastic part, the turned barrel has a perfectly round cross-section and the muzzle drilled out, so gluing two halves together, sanding down the mold parting line and laborious drilling of the barrel all fall away.

The real subject

The M4A3E2 was an assault Sherman with heavily reinforced armor on the hull and the turret, intended to support infantry in breaking through fortified positions. From the factory it carried the 75 mm M3 gun in a massive mantlet. That proved itself against fortifications, but against more heavily armored targets its performance was no longer enough, and so some of the vehicles were rearmed in field conditions with the 76 mm M1 gun taken from ordinary Shermans with the 76 mm turret. It is exactly this appearance, that is the original reinforced mantlet with a longer and slimmer barrel, that the set deals with.

Building and painting tips

Try the seating of the mantlet dry first and level any overhang of the turret face with a file, so that the part seats with no gap. Cyanoacrylate holds on metal and on resin more reliably than modeling cement for plastic, which does not work on other materials at all. Spray the part with primer before painting, or the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. It is practical to fit the barrel only after the mantlet has been painted, so that the inside of the muzzle does not get clogged with paint.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build American armored vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Builders who want to turn an ordinary Jumbo kit into the variant with the rearmed gun
  • Those interested in a more accurate shape of mantlet and barrel than a plastic casting offers
  • More advanced modelers who do not mind working with cyanoacrylate

FAQ

It is not. It is a replacement part fitted onto an already built or part-built model of the M4A3E2 in 1:35 scale. The base kit of the tank has to be owned separately.

Some of the vehicles were rearmed in the field with the 76 mm M1 gun taken from ordinary Shermans with the 76 mm turret. The set captures exactly this rearmed appearance.

Cyanoacrylate. Ordinary modeling cement for plastic does not hold on metal or on resin.

Try the seating dry. Depending on the kit used it may be necessary to level the face of the turret slightly with a file, so that the mantlet seats with no gap.
