This injection-molded plastic kit from the American brand Monogram in 1:24 scale covers the Plymouth Road Runner of the 1970 model year. It is a classic representative of the American muscle car era, a roomy coupe with a big V8 and deliberately plain equipment. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Plymouth introduced the Road Runner in 1968 in answer to the fact that muscle cars had grown expensive. The recipe was simple: take an ordinary mid-size body, put a strong V8 in it, leave out the inessential luxury and sell the car at a modest price. The brand licensed both the name and the horn with its distinctive sound from a cartoon character. The 1970 model year brought a reworked front and rear and a range of options, among them a system for drawing cold air into the carburetor. The engine range went from the basic big-block V8 up to the strongest variants intended for drag racing.
The body has long flat surfaces that will betray every ripple without careful preparation. Sand the seams, polish the surfaces and use a filler primer. American muscle cars often wore bold, loud shades, which cover better over a light base. Handle the sports stripes and the lettering with decals over a gloss surface and seal them with a clear coat once dry. The engine bay deserves time, because on these models it is usually well accessible; set the metal parts apart with metallic shades and pick the hoses out with a dark wash. Leave the tires matte.
