A masking set for the Emil in the E-3 variant: covering for the glazed cockpit, three insignia masks and a sheet of decals, 1:24 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The third production variant of the Emil introduced twenty-millimeter MG FF cannons into the wing and became the main form of the aircraft in the spring and summer campaign of 1940. Behind the cockpit it still had no armor plate, which the later machines received, so the silhouette of the canopy is cleaner and unbroken. Anyone building an E-3 tells it from the later versions by exactly that rear of the cockpit and by the armament.
The package offers both ways at once. Spraying pays off on large single-color areas with a hard edge, that is the crosses on the fuselage and on the underside of the wing, where the film of a decal would give itself away on rough paint. A decal, by contrast, manages what a mask cannot: numbers, unit badges, small lettering with thin strokes. A sensible procedure is therefore to combine both means according to the size and the complexity of the subject.
The surest result comes from a procedure in which the mask is stuck onto gloss varnish that has already dried. On a matte surface paint runs under the edge more often and the edge is then not clean.
German fighters of that time wore two shades of gray-green on the upper surfaces in a sharply broken pattern, and on the sides of the fuselage a soft mottled layer sprayed so that it passed into the light blue color underneath. The sharp break is masked with tape, the soft transition freehand from a greater distance, and it is exactly the alternation of both techniques on one model that tends to be the hardest part of the build for a beginner. The cockpit glazing is best kept covered throughout, because overspray from freehand work reaches further than one would expect.
Before sticking the masks on it pays to dip the transparent part in gloss varnish first and let it dry perfectly, because the material is then smoother and a mask sits on it more accurately.
The package does not hold a model of the aircraft.
