A masking set for the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the E-4 and E-7 versions, 1:24 scale. The glazing is covered from both sides and three parts belong to the markings.
Responsibility details are not available.
The E-7 version differed from the previous form in a small thing with large consequences: it received a pylon under the fuselage. A drop tank could be hung on it and with it the machine could reach where it had not got to before, or a bomb for attacks on ground targets. It was in exactly this form that the Messerschmitts appeared over North Africa, where they had to be fitted with a dust filter on the intake and a lighter desert finish.
The glazing stayed identical to the late examples of the previous version, and that is why this set covers both forms at once. The arrangement of surfaces is made up of flat panes in a firm frame, which suits pre-cut shapes, but it calls for careful placing, because neighboring fields are divided by only a thin bridge. A part that is bent or stretched shifts the whole row and the mistake is noticed only at the moment when it is too late to put right without respraying.
The package carries a pair of shapes for the glass, separately for the outer surface and separately for the inner side, and three parts intended for the national insignia.
With a desert scheme it pays to reckon with the fact that a light sandy shade covers worse than dark European camouflage. Apply it in several light coats and check the edge under the shape against the light before you set about the next step. It also pays to let the coat rest overnight, because light shades tend to be softer and are easily damaged during removal.
