Masks for the glazing of the late Bf 109K-4 in one twenty-fourth. They make it possible to spray the frames in different shades outside and inside and add four sets for national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a detail nobody deals with in a small scale and which in one twenty-fourth cannot be overlooked. The inside of the cockpit of German fighters was painted a dark gray, whereas the outside carried the camouflage shades of the upper surface. The frame of the glazing is therefore not meant to be one color: from outside it merges with the spine of the aircraft, from inside it is dark. Without masks for both sides that can hardly be achieved, because painting over a narrow bar with a brush on both faces without running is work for a watchmaker. A double set of masks gets around the whole problem, because each side is worked separately and between the two steps the part is simply turned over.
The K-4 version was the culmination of a development that began in the middle of the 1930s. It unified the earlier changes into a single standard, it received a taller fin area and a better view, but it reached the units at a time when experienced pilots and fuel were already lacking. That is exactly why it is among the most frequently built of the late 109s.
The package offers four sets of masks for national insignia. A sprayed marking is especially suited to models with a pronounced surface texture, where the film of a decal would have to be pressed down over rows of rivets with a softener and would still remain perceptible. Only the masks are part of the delivery; the model itself and the paints are obtained separately. Anyone building a late machine will also appreciate being able to spray the markings in a more subdued shade and so come closer to the look of a worn machine of the last weeks of the war.
