A surface with broken-up asphalt marked by the years is one of the most universal scenes that can be put under a car model. It belongs to no particular place, and that is why it suits almost anywhere. The base comes finished and the modeler uses it without any preparation.
A perfectly flat black area looks dead in a photograph. Once cracks, potholes and traces of repairs bite into it, though, the area starts to live and the eye travels over it. That is precisely why cracked asphalt appears under wrecks, under abandoned vehicles and under perfectly polished cars, where it works as a contrast between the new and the old.
It stands out most when you give the model light weathering on the chassis and in the wheel arches as well, so that the car and the surface tell the same story. It also sits superbly with models that are, on the contrary, completely new, because the contrast is a subject in itself. When photographing, it pays to go low over the surface so that the texture comes to the front of the shot. Deliberately overexposed side light, which draws long shadows out of the unevenness, works interestingly too.
