An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese maker Hasegawa in 1:24 scale. It is a limited edition of the classic Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS, set apart from the ordinary releases by the Custom Wheel designation, that is a focus on the form with custom wheels. The manufacturer makes the same vehicle in other boxes as well; this one is devoted to the modified look.
The 510 generation Bluebird was built from the second half of the 1960s and was sold on export markets under the Datsun marque. The letters SSS marked the sportier version with a more powerful 1600 OHC inline four. The vehicle rested on engineering that was modern at the time: strut front suspension and independently sprung rear wheels gave it sensitive steering and good behavior in corners. That is exactly what made it a successful rally and circuit car and a sought-after basis for conversions to this day. The clean, angular sedan body is among the icons of Japanese motoring classics.
The flat surfaces of the body will reveal every irregularity in the paint, so go for thin coats of primer and color and let each one cure properly. The chrome trim strips and window frames come out well if you deal with them with metal foil or thin self-adhesive tape rather than a brush. The wheels are the main theme of this edition, so give them time and set the gloss of the rim apart from the matte of the tire. Finish the interior before closing the body up and bring the instrument panel to life with a dark wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
