The board is of acrylic 3 millimeters thick, measures 180 x 357 millimeters and weighs roughly 210 grams. The strip format matches the way a car moves along a road, that is lengthwise rather than across.
Route 66 was made famous by the migration for work in the 1930s, when families headed west along it from the parched plains; John Steinbeck gave it the nickname the Mother Road in a novel. Later it became a symbol of American travel, with motels, gas stations and neon signs along the shoulder. It is exactly this air that a display case holding the model takes on. Traffic on the route fell silent decades ago, but among collectors the theme remains popular.
It stands out most when you place a single car on it and leave free space around it; an overcrowded scene breaks the motif up. In photography, side lighting helps so that the ceiling is not reflected in the print. The smooth surface lets a model be slid across to the ideal framing without your having to lift it. By the width of the strip you can also measure out how much room a diorama you are only now preparing would take.
