The Mitsubishi Starion is a rear-wheel-drive sports coupe built from the early 1980s. You can spot it at a glance by its wedge silhouette and by the pop-up headlights, which only come up after dark or in fog. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine sat under the hood, so the Starion belonged to the fast Japanese school of its day, the one Europe still remembers. The model captures the 1985 form.
Fujimi offers it as a plastic kit in 1:24 scale. That is the most widespread size for car models and it leaves plenty of room for a detailed interior and chassis. The model is supplied as a set of parts to assemble and paint.
Cut the parts off with sharp sprue cutters a little away from the part and level the remaining nub with a fine file or a sanding sponge. Wash the body in lukewarm water with a drop of dish soap before painting and let it dry completely, otherwise the paint will not hold. Apply the color in several thin coats; the 1980s suit a smooth gloss, so it is worth polishing it once it has dried. The pop-up headlights and the black window frames call for patient brushwork or for masking, and in both cases a sharp edge shows at first glance.
The set will please modelers who collect Japanese coupes of the 1980s as well as builders experienced with automotive painting. Paints, glue and other building material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
