A sheet of waterslide decals by the manufacturer Art Scale with technical stencils and service markings for models of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX fighter aircraft in 1:24 scale. They are not national insignia or the personal markings of particular machines: they are the small captions that on the real aircraft marked the filler necks, the access panels, the tie-down and lifting points or the instructions for the ground crew. In the large 1:24 scale these stencils are legible and leaving them out is immediately noticeable on a finished model.
The Spitfire Mk.IX arose as a quick answer to the appearance of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter. A two-stage supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was built into an airframe derived from the Mk.V version, which gave the type back its superiority at higher altitudes. The recognition feature is the longer nose with two cooling air intakes under the wing. The Mk.IX became one of the most-produced versions of the Spitfire and served with a number of Allied air forces.
Waterslide decals hold reliably only on a smooth glossy base, so first spray the surface with a gloss varnish and let it cure. Dip the decal briefly, leave it to rest on its paper and slide it into place. Soak the excess water up with a paper towel and apply a decal softener, so that the stencil settles onto the engraved lines and the rivets. Lay the small captions down one at a time and check them against the drawing, so that the orientation is right as well. Once dry, varnish the whole model with a matte coat, so that the edges of the decals disappear and the surface is unified.
