An accessory for building the British Spitfire fighter in the Vb version: paper masks for the glazed cockpit, for three insignia and a decal sheet.
Responsibility details are not available.
The ratio between time spent and visible effect shifts in favor of masking as the scale grows. On a model in 1:32 scale, painting the cockpit framing by hand takes a good half hour and the result tends to be acceptable with a little practice. In 1:24 there are more frames, they are longer and the viewer examines them close up, so the same handwork takes several times as long and still gives a worse result. In this scale a set of masks is therefore not a shortcut for the impatient but the most reliable route to a clean cockpit.
The machine was powered by a Merlin 45 engine of around twelve hundred horsepower, the span was eleven meters and the top speed came close to six hundred kilometers per hour. In a large scale such a model has a span of just under half a meter, which is a dimension that calls for a solid display cabinet.
It pays to keep the masks you have removed on their backing paper until the varnishing is finished, because it is sometimes useful to cover the same area a second time while the varnish is applied.
At a size of around half a meter a display cabinet stops being a detail and becomes part of the decision. The model needs a depth of at least thirty centimeters to fit in with some clearance, and without glass, dust settles on large horizontal surfaces far faster than you would expect. It therefore pays to know in advance where the finished piece will go. Glass also keeps the paint fresh longer, because direct sunlight will reliably fade pigments in light shades within a few years.
