The memorial event bearing the name of Attilio Bettega was run from the mid-1980s in the grounds of the Bologna motor show and commemorated the Italian driver who died on a rally in Corsica. The format was short and rewarding for spectators: knockout duels between two cars on a tight course built inside the exhibition halls, where tenths of a second and courage at the first turn-in decided the outcome. In 1993 a Japanese Impreza in competition specification turned up there, that is a car at the very beginning of its long and exceptionally successful career.
A competition car is more demanding to build than a production one, though somewhat less so than a circuit special. A roll cage and a cleared-out space with no trim belong inside, while competition wheels and an extensive color scheme are added outside. Plan it over four to six weeks: the first stage is the body and the primer, the second the paint, the third the interior with the roll cage, the fourth the decals and the last the final assembly with the chassis, the wheels and the glass.
The scheme of the competition cars of the 1990s is built on a combination of a saturated blue with secondary colors and on large areas that carry over the edges of the fenders. It is precisely the transitions that are critical here. Apply the decals onto a perfectly glossy surface, use a softener and let them dry thoroughly before you start on the varnish. Anyone who wants to spare his nerves does the sides first and only then the lids and the roof.
