About product

The Toyota Celica TA64, winner of the 1985 Safari Rally, 1:24 scale

A plastic kit of the competition Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo TA64 in the version in which it won the Safari Rally in 1985, in 1:24 scale. It is issued by Nunu Models in its racing range. The Safari had technical specifics of its own: a car received a massive front guard and auxiliary headlights for it, so visually it differs from the European asphalt and gravel versions of the same car.

The real subject

The Celica Twincam Turbo with the factory designation TA64 was created for the top competition category of the first half of the 1980s. Toyota went a different way from the competition: instead of all-wheel drive it bet on the classic layout with the engine at the front and the rear axle driven, supplemented by a turbocharged four-cylinder. For fast, long and rough African stages that proved a very strong combination, as the car was rugged, easy to repair and reliable on long special stages. Juha Kankkunen won the Safari Rally in 1985 with it; the winning car started with number 21. The African campaign is still what most fans associate with the TA64 today.

Building and painting tips

The white base color of the competition Toyota is uncompromising toward surface defects, so filler primer and fine sanding before the final paint pay off. Apply the sponsor decals on a perfectly gloss surface with a decal softener. A Safari version takes more honest weathering than European rallies: a fine red-brown layer of dust from the skirts and the fenders upward, dirtied edges of the lights and a matte underside will make an enormous difference. Fit the protective bars and the auxiliary headlights only at the very end, so that they do not fall off during handling.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of rally specials of the 1980s in 1:24 scale
  • Fans of Toyota and of Japanese competition cars
  • Modelers who want a model with room for dust weathering
  • Builders with experience of large-area decals

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The Celica TA64 was a competition special with the engine at the front and the rear axle driven. That is precisely how it differed from most of the rivals of the time with all-wheel drive.

Yes. Cars for the Safari received a massive front guard and a set of auxiliary headlights because of the long African special stages. Visually that is the most striking difference from the European versions.

Juha Kankkunen won the Safari Rally in 1985 with the Celica TA64. The winning car started with number 21.

Thin plastic cement, filler primer, paints, gloss varnish under the decals, a decal softener and pigments or washes for dust weathering.
