An injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese maker Hasegawa in 1:24 scale. The subject is the Toyota Corolla Levin of the AE92 series in GT-Z trim, in the later form after the facelift, completed by a front spoiler under the bumper. The combination of the top version and the later form is exactly what sets this box apart from the other Levin boxes.
The AE92 series replaced the famous rear-wheel-drive AE86 in 1987 and moved to front-wheel drive. The top of the range was the GT-Z version, set apart from the ordinary GT-Apex by a sixteen-valve four supercharged by a mechanical compressor. That gave the vehicle a markedly fuller spread of torque than the naturally aspirated version and made the Levin a fast compact coupe of the late 1980s. The later form brought a reworked front end and detail changes to the body. The AE92 also made its mark in Group A touring car racing, which helped it considerably among collectors.
The coupe body has long smooth sides, so a primer, thin coats of paint and a long enough cure before the gloss varnish under the decals all pay off. Offer the front spoiler up dry and check how it follows on from the bumper, and only then fix it for good. Mask the headlights and the windows before painting; the black window frames can then be dealt with by thin tape or a carefully guided brush. Finish the interior before closing the body up and tone the cloth seats down with a matte surface.
