Feral Brown is a dark brown shade from the Opaque Colors acrylic line of the Green Stuff World marque. While the light browns in a palette find their use mainly in the final coats, a dark brown is a working color: it lies underneath, creates depth and holds the texture on which everything else is then built.

A dark brown instead of black

Experienced figure painters reach for a dark brown wherever a pure black would kill the surface. In a small scale black reads as a hole, because in reality completely black shadows practically do not occur. A brown of the same lightness will hold the depth but let the surface breathe, and the coats that follow sit on it far more naturally.

• An underlying coat beneath lighter brown and sandy shades
• Shading the folds of clothing, fur and leather parts
• Darkening too bright a shade when mixing your own tone
