A set of injection-molded plastic figures of a French tank crew in 1:35 scale. It is not a model of a vehicle but an accessory that brings a crewed machine to life and gives it its scale. Heller is a French maker and in recent years has broadened its range of French ground vehicles in 1:35, with which a crew goes logically together.
Tank crews differ from infantry in the kit forced on them by the cramped space of a fighting vehicle: a shorter coverall or jacket with no loose parts, a helmet adapted to work in a turret and a minimum of equipment hung about them. It is these details that decide whether a figure beside a vehicle reads credibly. The particular poses and the period the set relates to are shown by the artwork on the packaging.
Glue the figures and even out the seams at the shoulders and the waist, so that they do not disturb the line of the clothing. Build the base from a darker undercoat and work the color from the shadows to the highlights; on fabric, oil paints or heavily thinned acrylics applied in layers prove their worth. Paint the faces last and do not hurry over them, because it is they that decide the impression of the whole scene. It pays to try a figure dry in a hatch or beside the vehicle before painting, so that the position of the arms and the lean of the body sit right.
