About product

The Republic P-47C Thunderbolt with a ferry tank in 1:48 from Dora Wings

Dora Wings is a Ukrainian brand known for carefully worked kits of less usual versions of well known aircraft. This model in 1:48 scale takes up the P-47C version, that is the early Thunderbolt in the razorback form with a raised spine behind the cockpit, and the boxing also names an external ferry tank. The 1:48 scale is the most widespread compromise between the size of a model and the degree of detail among aircraft models.

The real subject

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was among the largest and heaviest single-engined fighters of the Second World War. It was powered by a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine with a turbocharger in the rear part of the fuselage, which gave it outstanding performance at high altitude. The P-47C version was the first Thunderbolt committed to combat over Western Europe, where from the spring of 1943 it flew with units of the Eighth Air Force. It was precisely with it that the main shortcoming of the type, that is the limited range, showed in full. The answer came in drop tanks, including the capacious ferry tank, which the units adapted for combat missions and so extended the reach of escort flights.

Building and painting tips

With a model that has such a pronounced fuselage it pays off to give attention to the fit of the halves and to smooth sanding of the joint on the spine. It is good to finish the cockpit before the fuselage is closed. A natural metal finish, in which early Thunderbolts also appeared, calls for a perfectly smooth base, because glossy shades will reveal even small scratches.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of American fighters of the Second World War in 1:48
  • Modelers interested in the early versions of the Thunderbolt
  • More experienced builders who will appreciate the fine breakdown of the parts
  • Anyone interested in the subject of the escort fighters of the Eighth Air Force

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an early variant with a spine behind the cockpit, that is still before the bubble canopy was introduced. It was the first version of the Thunderbolt committed to combat in Europe.

Originally for flights over long distances. The units, however, used it for combat missions too, in order to extend the reach of escort flights.

It is a Ukrainian manufacturer known for kits of less usual versions of aircraft, among others in 1:48 scale.

Rather for more experienced builders. The fine breakdown of the parts calls for patience and dry-fitted assembly.
