About product

Lifecolor - a paint set for the uniforms of the Austro-Hungarian Army 1916 to 1918

A set of paints from the Italian brand Lifecolor put together for painting figures and busts of soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army in the closing phase of the First World War. It is not a kit and not an accessory to a model but painting material aimed at the uniform, the equipment and the accessories of a soldier of the Austro-Hungarian Army.

The real subject

Austria-Hungary entered the war in a uniform of light gray-blue cloth, which in German was called Hechtgrau, that is pike gray. Over the years of the war it was gradually replaced by gray-green field cloth, and it is precisely this period that the span of the set covers. Besides the cloth of the uniform, the color make-up of a figure is formed by the leather webbing, the canvas parts of the equipment, the field cap and the helmet, the mess gear and the metal parts of the weapon. Soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army fought on the Italian, the Russian and the Balkan fronts, so the same uniforms appear in completely different scenes, from the snow-covered Dolomites to the dusty plains of Galicia.

How to work with the paints

Uniform cloth is never painted on a figure in one flat tone. Apply thin layers, lighten the edges of the folds and deepen the shadows, so that the figure stays legible even from a distance. The shades of the set can be mixed with one another, so for several figures in one scene you can make each uniform slightly different and the scene does not look as uniform as if it came out of one mold. Shake the bottles properly before work and thin according to the manufacturer's recommendation.

Who the set is for

For painters of figures and busts, for builders of dioramas of the Eastern and the Italian front and for modelers who take up the armies of the First World War and Austro-Hungarian military history.

FAQ

The uniform of the Austro-Hungarian Army changed during the war. The set aims at its later form, not at the one of the first years of the war.

The exact composition is stated on the box of the set. The shades are put together so as to cover the cloth of the uniform, the leather webbing and the metal parts of the equipment.

Yes. The shade does not depend on the scale, only the technique changes: with busts the work is with finer transitions and more pronounced shading.

It is aimed at the uniforms and the equipment of soldiers. For vehicles and guns a set intended for equipment is the one to reach for.
