This is a small accessory for figures, not a kit of a model. The set brings the Italian Mod. 33 pattern steel helmet in 1:48 scale and serves to replace a simplified helmet on a figure, to be laid in a diorama or to complete gear left on a vehicle. The number of pieces in the package and the material of the part are stated on its box.
The Mod. 33 pattern helmet, in Italian Elmetto Mod. 33, was introduced in the Italian army in 1933 and replaced the older French-type Adrian helmet. It has a smooth shell with a slightly drawn-in brim and is among the most easily recognizable features of the Italian soldier of the Second World War, from the fighting in North Africa through the Balkans to the Eastern Front. It stayed in service long after 1945, so it suits postwar subjects as well.
First separate the part from its carrier block with a sharp knife or a fine saw and level the mark left by the cut with fine-grit abrasive paper. Wash the surface before painting and let it dry thoroughly, so that the paint holds well. With parts of this size super glue tends to be more reliable than cement for plastic. A thin layer of base coat evens the surface out, and the shade itself comes out best with a dry brush on the edges and a dark wash drawn into the recesses. The chin strap and the buckle can be suggested with a fine brush, or with a fine dark line around the edge of the shell.
