A set of masks for the North American A-36 Apache in 1:32 scale. It contains canopy masks from both faces, three national insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Apache stands at the beginning of the Mustang pedigree, still before the Merlin. It was based on the airframe with the Allison engine, whose power fell away quickly above five thousand meters, and it was therefore given a role in which performance at altitude did not matter: attacking ground targets. Rectangular dive brakes were added above and below the wing, and bomb racks under the wing. The machine served mainly over Sicily and Italy and the name Apache stuck to it alongside the nickname Invader.
Anyone building the Apache after experience with a late Mustang runs into trouble right above the cockpit. The fuselage has a raised decking and the canopy is made up of a fixed front frame, hinged side panels and fixed rear glazing; there is no teardrop bubble, that came two generations later. The flat side panels have pronounced framing and are masked piece by piece. Characteristic too is the radiator moved back under the fuselage and the carburetor intake scoop above the nose, which the later Merlin versions do not have.
The manufacturer states glazing masks twice over, that is separately for the outside and separately for the inside, plus three insignia pieces and decals. Three stars match American practice, in which a machine carried the insignia on both sides of the fuselage and on one half of the wing as well. Lay a piece onto cool glass with no fingerprints, otherwise the edge is undermined and the paint bleeds.
In a large scale several thin passes and lifting in good time, still before the finish has fully cured, prove their worth. The edge then stays crisp and the vinyl does not tear. Plastic, paints and glue are not part of this item; a built machine is assumed.
