1:32 Bell Airacobra Mk.I - AH574 for Royal Navy tests Conversion Set - an AML conversion set for the trials machine AH574 tested for the Royal Navy. An accessory for the Special Hobby Airacobra kit in 1:32.
Responsibility details are not available.
An AML conversion set for rendering the Bell Airacobra Mk.I with the serial number AH574, which served on trials for the Royal Navy. The set reworks the Special Hobby Airacobra kit in 1:32 scale into the form of this trials machine; you will not find the aircraft itself in the package.
The Airacobra stood out for its unusual layout: the engine lay in the middle of the fuselage behind the pilot, a shaft ran under the cockpit floor to a cannon firing through the propeller hub, and the machine stood on nose landing gear. The British took the type over under the designation Mk.I, but did not keep it in front-line service for long. Individual aircraft then served trials programs, and among them were the naval tests of the machine AH574, which created this remarkable modeling opportunity.
With trials aircraft what matters most is fidelity to the particular machine - go through the pictures available and check where the fittings are placed. Fit the conversion parts before painting and secure the joints with a glue suited to their material. Bring out the traces of service only sparingly, as trials machines tended to be carefully maintained. The Airacobra was entered through car-type doors in the sides of the fuselage, so their frames and glazing deserve careful cleaning up. Because of the engine behind the pilot, keep an eye on the balance of the model as well; only a limited amount of weight fits into the slim nose.
