When the fighter wing JG 27 moved to North Africa in the spring of 1941, it was given precisely this series of the Messerschmitt. Conditions were different from Europe: sand destroyed engines, so the aircraft received large filters on the intake, and the thin hot air pushed performance down. Even so it was the F series with which the pilots there amassed the most victories, because in the horizontal and in the climb it outclassed the British types of the day.
The desert finish differs fundamentally from the European one. A sand shade covered the upper surfaces and the sides, light blue the undersides, and over that the units oversprayed irregular green blotches, almost solid on some aircraft. The white features of the Mediterranean theater belonged with it: a band around the fuselage and often the wingtips as well. Three insignia masks help to keep the crosses crisp even over the texture of a dusty finish.
The angular canopy frames of this series are easy to mask, but the head armor frame behind the pilot is often weakly molded in large scales. It pays to check it before the film goes on, because once the paint is down a repair means repainting the whole part.
Desert aircraft are weathered with sand and dust after painting, which changes the order of the work. The insignia have to be finished before the dry pigment goes on, otherwise the film will not adhere to a dusty surface and the paint will run under its edge.
