Masks for the Dewoitine D.520 kit in 1:32 scale from Azur. The package differs from the other sets of this series in that there is only one mask for the glazing and it covers the outer side of the canopy; the inner outline is not included. Two masks for the national insignia complement it.
The French Air Force wore a round roundel with three concentric fields. After the armistice of 1940, conspicuous distinguishing marking was added to the machines under the government at Vichy: yellow and red diagonal stripes on the nose and on the rudder. It was meant to keep units that had been flying together a few weeks earlier from firing at each other. The same type thus flew against the Germans, then against the Allies in Syria and finally on the Allied side again. The roundel stayed the same throughout; everything around it changed.
It was the only French fighter that in the summer of 1940 was a match for the German machines of the time. It carried a cannon firing through the axis of the propeller spinner and against home competition it had considerably cleaner aerodynamics. It reached combat late, however, and in small numbers.
Because there is no mask for the inner outline in the set, the inner frames have to be masked by hand or left in the color of the interior. The procedure is easier if the canopy is sprayed from inside before it is seated in the fuselage. The diagonal stripes on the nose are sprayed after the insignia are applied, not the other way round.
