The real subject

The Dewoitine D.510 is a French all-metal monoplane of the mid-1930s, the last development branch of the D.500 series. It had an open cockpit and fixed landing gear with teardrop wheel spats, that is a combination of features that was quickly moving between the old and the new solution in its day. A cowled V12 engine made it possible to run the barrel of a cannon through the axis of the reduction gear and the propeller hub, which was a typical arrangement on French fighters of the period. An open cockpit and uncovered landing gear mean that there is less glazing to mask on a model, but all the more can be seen inside.

Usage tips

Before masking, wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry; a mask will not hold on a greasy surface. Lift the template off the backing with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel and lay it in the middle of the frame, then press it to the edges with a toothpick. Spray the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat will run under the edge of the mask. Remove the mask soon after the paint has set, not after it has cured fully, otherwise the paint on the edge may lift off with it.
