A decal set from the Hungarian brand HAD models intended for pilot figures in 1:32 scale. These are not decals for the aircraft but markings for helmets and patches for a flight suit. The name gives the squadrons VF-143, VF-213 and VF-41 and the F-14A and F-14D machines. It is precisely these small things that turn a generic pilot figure into a particular person from a particular unit, and they can be added even to a finished, already painted model.
A pilot's helmet is, in 1:32 scale, big enough for both its color finish and the unit emblem to be noticeable, and the patches on the flight suit are just as legible. Markings like these are hard to paint by hand, so a decal is a far surer route. The set suits pilot figures, which a number of manufacturers offer at this scale, and figures placed in the open cockpit of a model.
Decals belong on a smooth, glossy base, otherwise a matte haze stays under the film. So go over the area with gloss varnish first and let it cure. Release the decal in lukewarm water, transfer it into place and draw the excess water off with the tip of a paper tissue. On curved surfaces such as a helmet, use a decal softener so that the film draws down onto the shape. Once dry, go over the surface with varnish and then match the sheen to the surroundings, most often matte on a flight suit.
The decals are an accessory. The figure, the model and varnishes and softeners are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
