F-15C Eagle — a 3D cockpit decal in 1:32 scale

This is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for the cockpit of a plastic model in 1:32 scale. The printed parts are on decal paper, they carry their own color and a relief texture, and they replace the flat engraved panels supplied with the kit. Application works as with a classic decal: soak it off in lukewarm water, slide it into place, line it up and settle it with a decal softener. There is no cutting, no sanding and no plastic cement. The shapes of the panels correspond to the Tamiya kit.

What is special about the F-15C cockpit

The F-15C is a single-seat air superiority fighter and its cockpit stands exactly at the turn between the analog and the display era. The main panel keeps round gauges for flight and for the engines, but screens for the radar and the tactical situation already sit in its center; later upgrades replaced some of the instruments with a color display. Two long side consoles run around the seat — on the left the throttles and the fuel and propulsion panels, on the right the avionics and the cockpit environment controls. What matters for the modeler is that this is not a single panel: the cockpit is made up of the coaming, the main panel and two consoles, each of which behaves differently to the eye.

What stays visible once the canopy is closed

The F-15 has a one-piece hinged canopy with a large undivided area and low sills, so even with the cockpit closed practically the whole space stays visible, including both consoles and the seat belts. That is the opposite of machines with a densely framed canopy, where most of the work is hidden. Here it is worth finishing even what nobody would otherwise see. Polish the clear parts before closing up and allow the decals to dry thoroughly, otherwise they can no longer be corrected under a closed canopy.
