This item is not a model of the tank but an aftermarket detail accessory from the Czech maker Hauler. It holds cooling grilles for the engine compartment made of photo-etched sheet, meant for the model of the Tiger II heavy tank in 1:48 scale. The set is cut exactly for the Tamiya kit, so the parts fit without any adjustment of shape and replace the plastic parts from the original molding.
On the Tiger II the grilles over the engine compartment are one of the first places an experienced eye looks at. Injection-molded plastic can never make them thin enough, and the openings tend to be merely suggested or blanked off. Photo-etched sheet is a few tenths of a millimeter thick, so the grille really is see-through and from above you can see shadow and depth beneath it. On a model in a small scale, where the engine deck is a large continuous area, it is one of the simplest ways of moving the overall impression up a class.
Carefully mill or sand the original plastic grilles down flat and go over the area with fine paper. Degrease the photo-etched parts first in warm water with a little detergent and from then on handle them with tweezers. Make the bends in a bender or between two blades, always in the scored groove. It is bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally with a pin. A primer is necessary before painting, or the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. After spraying the base shade, a dark wash and a light dry brush that pulls out the edges work well on the grilles.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The model itself, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package.
