National insignia stencils for the Phantom F-4E and F-4EJ in 1:32 scale let the markings be sprayed instead of applying decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
Masking stencils for spraying the national markings on the gun-armed version of the Phantom. Paint applied through a stencil merges with the surface, so after polishing and a matte clear coat it is impossible to tell where the insignia begins. It also removes the risk of a large decal breaking or rippling as it is settled.
The American machines carried the star in rectangular bars, along with lettering on the fuselage and a base code on the tail. The Japanese F-4EJ instead carry the red disc of the Air Self-Defense Force on the wings and the fuselage and usually very restrained additional markings, with the number of the machine on the vertical tail. The two looks are utterly different on a model even though the airframe is the same, so a builder can make two unmistakably different machines from one kit.
Round insignia need a perfectly smooth base, otherwise the paint will creep under the edge. Apply two or three thin coats and let them set in between. With a deep red it pays to lay white underneath, otherwise the shade will darken from the camouflage below it. Anyone who wants to be sure of the result should try the whole sequence of coats on a piece of scrap plastic first and only then touch the finished model.
