Quickboost specializes in small resin accessories that improve one particular detail of a model. This item brings the antenna of the identification friend or foe system for the F/A-18 A, B, C and D versions in 1:32 scale. A casting can be more delicate and more accurate than an injection-molded plastic part, where the fidelity of small antennas is limited by what the mold allows. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for a kit bought separately. The number of parts in the package is stated on the box.
The IFF system, that is identification of friend or foe, works on the principle of an interrogation and a reply between a radar and a transponder on board the aircraft. On the F/A-18 the antennas belonging to it are placed on the surface of the airframe, where they form characteristic small protrusions. Their number and placing differ between individual machines and periods of service, so it pays to compare them with photographs of the particular aircraft you are building.
Wash the part in lukewarm water with detergent and cut the casting block off with a saw as close to the part as possible: on a small antenna a careless squeeze with cutters is enough to crack the casting. Sand the remainder of the block wet. Remove the original plastic part from the model and level the surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a toothpick. The antenna is best glued on only after the base finish of the airframe has been sprayed, and the paint on it then just touched in with a brush, so that the small part does not break off during masking.
The add-on set is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
