About product

Masking set 1:32 Gloster Gladiator Mk.II from Montex

This set is a collection of self-adhesive masks for a model of the Gloster Gladiator biplane in the Mk.II version in 1:32 scale. According to the name of the product it holds canopy glazing masks for the outside and the inside, and further marking masks for two machines — one British and one Finnish. It is not a kit and not decals: the masks are there so that you spray both the canopy frames and the national insignia in paint directly onto the model. The extent of the sheets and the exact make-up of the individual masks are stated on the box.

Why masks instead of decals

Sprayed markings have no carrier film, so no glossy outline appears on the model and there is no risk of silvering. In the large 1:32 scale that difference shows at first glance — a decal simply gives itself away on a large roundel. The masks also hold their shape on curved surfaces and there is no risk of a design shifting or tearing during application. The price for that is more careful preparation: the paint has to be laid on in thin coats, or a lip will form under the edge of the mask.

How to work with the masks

Lift the masks off the backing with a sharp point, not with your fingers — grease on the adhesive worsens the hold. Lay them on the model onto a completely dry and clean finish and then press the edge down thoroughly with a toothpick or a rounded point, especially where it runs over engraved lines. Spray the paint square to the surface and in several light coats; overspray under an edge happens mainly when the paint runs. With the inside glazing masks it pays to paint the frames from inside in the interior color before you fit the canopy. Lift a mask while the paint has only just set — once it has fully cured there is a risk of tearing the finish away with it. With multi-color markings work from the lighter shade to the darker one.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Gladiator Mk.II in the large 1:32 scale.
  • Those who want national insignia sprayed rather than applied.
  • Anyone interested in the British and Finnish forms of the biplane.
  • Modelers bothered by decals silvering on large areas.

This is not a kit. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are self-adhesive masks. With them the national insignia are sprayed in paint directly onto the model, so no carrier film and no silvering appear.

They let you paint the canopy frames from inside in the interior color as well. The cockpit then looks realistic even seen through the glass, which shows clearly in a large scale.

According to the name there are two machines, one British and one Finnish. The exact make-up of the masks is in the instructions in the package.

Best shortly after spraying, while the paint has only just set. Once it has fully cured the edge may break away along with the finish.
