It is an accessory, not a model — the package holds no plastic parts, paints or glue. The exact make-up of the sheets and the numbers of masks are given in the manufacturer's instructions in the package.
A decal is quicker and will manage even complex multi-color artwork. A mask takes more work, but the result is more durable and, above all, free of the carrier film that gives itself away under a matte finish as a glossy outline. The deciding factor tends to be the surface: on a smooth finish both hold up, but on the textured fabric covering of a biplane a mask has the edge, because the paint creeps into the hollows between the ribs as well. In the large 1:32 scale that difference shows at first glance.
The quality of a sprayed insignia lives and dies by the edge of the mask. The surface has to be degreased and cured — a fresh finish is soft and the mask will print into it. Once it is laid on, press the edge down with a rounded point around the whole perimeter, especially where it runs over engraved lines or over a rib. Push the air out from under the mask toward the edge. Go over the edge once more before spraying; a few seconds of work saves later repairs.
Spray square on, thinly and preferably in several passes — paint that runs will get under any edge. With multi-color insignia work from the light shade to the dark. Lift a mask shortly after spraying, with a pull back at an angle across itself; pulling it straight off strains the edge of the finish and can peel it away. Use the inside glazing masks before you build the canopy onto the fuselage.
