Figures of American airfield personnel from 1940 to 1945 in the large 1:32 scale from the brand Black Dog. The name gives the designation set, which this numbered line uses for its group items. The figures are conceived as maintenance men at work, that is in more civilian working dress than the airmen.
The maintenance men of American air units worked predominantly under the open sky, on hard surfaces at the edge of an airfield. Their dress was practical: a working flight suit or trousers with a shirt, often a peaked cap and gloves. It is exactly this lack of uniformity that is an advantage when painting - each figure will bear a different shade of fabric and a different degree of dirtying.
A group reads differently than a lone figure: it has to have a shared focus. Direct the gazes and the hands toward one point, say toward an opened engine cover, toward a cart with tools or toward a sheet of paper in the hand of one of the figures. The base then does not have to be extensive; a section of hard surface with an oil stain and a few objects set down is enough. Put the shades of the flight suits slightly out of tune with one another, so that the group does not come across as a line on parade.
