Pre-cut self-adhesive painting masks in 1:32 scale from Art Scale. These are not a kit or spare parts but an aid for painting. The masks are stuck onto the clear parts, cover the transparent areas and leave only the cockpit framing exposed, which is then sprayed with a sharp edge. The double-sided version allows for masking the glazing from the outside and from the inside, so you paint the framing from inside as well. That is exactly what shows in a large scale: an open cockpit can be seen into, and an unpainted inner frame gives the shortcut away. The set is cut to the shape of the parts of a particular kit, so with another kit check the fit first.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G series was a German single-seat fighter with an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine. The G-2 and G-4 versions are very similar in airframe and differ mainly in equipment, above all the radio set. Both still belong to the group with a smooth cowling over the forward fuselage, without the prominent bulges that later variants brought. The glazing consists of a fixed front section, a hinged center canopy with a side frame and the rear part; the frames are narrow and angled, which makes hand masking a tedious job.
Wash the clear parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry. Pop the masks out of the sheet with the tip of a scalpel and carry them with tweezers. Stick the inner masks on before you fit the canopy to the fuselage, or you will no longer be able to reach them. Press each mask from the center toward the edges and smooth the edge down with a toothpick. Trim any piece that does not sit with a fresh blade right on the part. Spray the interior shade first, then the primer and the camouflage, always in thin coats at right angles to the surface. Lift the masks as soon as the paint has flashed off, pulling them back at an angle over themselves.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a kit or spare parts. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
