About product

Resin MG 15 machine guns in 1:32 scale from Eduard

A set of castings in modeling resin that replaces the plastic version of the MG 15 aircraft machine gun in 1:32 scale. Resin differs from injection-molded plastic in that it is poured into a soft silicone mold, and it therefore tolerates undercuts, fine ribbing and see-through openings that could not be released from a steel mold. On a weapon with a perforated cooling jacket and a complex mounting, the difference shows at first glance. Eduard is a Czech manufacturer from Obrnice near Most.

The real subject

The MG 15 is a German 7.92 mm aircraft machine gun, used during the Second World War on the flexible defensive stations of bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. The weapon has a perforated cooling jacket, a shoulder rest and a characteristic saddle drum magazine seated on top. It was worked by hand by a gunner who swung the weapon in its mounting, so on a model the whole of it is usually visible, including the rear part and the sights.

Usage and painting tips

The resin parts are held on a casting block, that is on the remnant of the material with which the mold was filled. They must not be snapped off, as the casting may crack. The block is separated with a fine saw, ideally a cutting wire or a saw with a thin blade, a little away from the part; the remainder is then sanded down. The sanding dust from resin must not be inhaled, so wear a respirator or sand wet. Before painting, wash the part in warm water with detergent so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed, otherwise the paint will not hold. Resin is glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate glue. As for color, a dark base works well, then drybrushing in a metallic shade on the edges and the perforation, and finally graphite powder or a dark wash into the cooling jacket. It pays to drill the muzzle out carefully with a fine bit.

Who the set is for

  • builders of models of German aircraft in 1:32 scale with defensive stations
  • modelers for whom a plastic weapon with a solid cooling jacket is not enough
  • more experienced builders with experience of cutting off casting blocks
  • collectors of details for open cockpits and turrets

This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check before buying that the set matches your kit.

FAQ

No, it is an accessory for a model of an aircraft in 1:32 scale. The model itself is not included in the package.

With a fine saw or a cutting wire a little away from the part, then sand the remainder down. Snapping it off often breaks the casting.

Mold release agent stays on the surface. Without washing in warm water with detergent the paint will not adhere and it peels off.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Modeling cement for plastic does not soften resin and will not hold.
