The Mitsubishi A6M5/A6M7 Reisen landing gear bay masks 1:32 keep airbrush overspray out of the painted interior of the bay.
Responsibility details are not available.
A masking set for the landing gear bays of a model of the Japanese Mitsubishi Reisen carrier fighter in 1:32 scale. The name gives the A6M5 and A6M7 versions. The contents are self-adhesive templates cut to the shape of the bay; they serve for painting and do not stay on the finished model.
Overspray is a worse enemy than a direct hit
When spraying with an airbrush it is usually not the main stream of paint that gets into a bay, but the fine mist that bounces inside off the surrounding surfaces. It does not make a continuous coat, it merely dirties the shade of the interior and knocks its contrast against the outer finish down with a residual dusting. That is exactly why a bay is masked even when it apparently is not being sprayed. The procedure is then simple: spray the interior, let it dry through, cover it, and only then work over the airframe.
The inside of a bay has a different shade
The inner surfaces of the landing gear bays are on a model painted practically always differently from the outer surface of the airframe. For that difference to work, the transition has to be crisp, and that is precisely what a mask holds and what cannot be done freehand.
Spray at lower pressure and in shorter bursts; the more aggressive the stream, the more likely it is to find a way under the edge of the film. Press the perimeter of the template down with a toothpick or the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers before spraying, because in the depth of the part you cannot reach the edge with a finger. Take the mask off once the varnish has set, while the layer is still flexible; the edge tears from fully cured paint when it is lifted.
